Abstract

This work introduces the concept of "spatial detachment" — a classification that describes the geometric relationship between glacier complexes, ice shelves, and the main ice sheet using mapped ice-type extents and their shared boundaries (based on the ADD coastline). The classification aims to prevent the double-counting of SLR contributions across datasets (glaciers and ice sheet) by describing static spatial connectivity only; it does not assess ice dynamics. Key points Defines "spatial detachment" from polygon geometry and shared boundaries. Uses ADD coastline mapping (Gerrish et al., 2024) as the basis for boundary attribution. Purpose: a spatial detachment classification that captures first-order structural relationships between glaciers, ice shelves, and the ice sheet. Limitation: purely geometric, final classification needs community discussion and does not imply dynamic connectivity.
