Recalibrating India's Eastern Defence - The Strategic Significance of a New Army Base in Mizoram
Abstract
This article examines the strategic significance of India’s proposed new Army base in Mizoram as part of a broader recalibration of the country’s eastern defence posture. Using recent reporting on the Indian Army’s efforts to strengthen security around the Siliguri Corridor as a narrative entry point, the article situates Mizoram within an expanded security perimeter stretching from the Chicken’s Neck to the Indo-Myanmar frontier. It argues that while the immediate rationale for the new base is framed in terms of safeguarding critical connectivity against potential state and non-state contingencies in the Bangladesh sector, its deeper strategic relevance lies in addressing instability emanating from Myanmar’s Chin State following the 2021 military coup. The article analyses how armed conflict, displacement, and governance collapse in Chin State have generated cross-border spillover effects into Mizoram, complicating India’s internal security environment. It further explores how enduring ethnic and kinship ties among Mizo, Chin, and wider Zo communities shape India’s policy options, constraining a purely militarised approach and necessitating a balance between humanitarian considerations and border control. Situating the Mizoram deployment within India’s evolving forward defence doctrine, the study assesses its interaction with the Assam Rifles, its implications for securing connectivity corridors under the Act East Policy, and its role in providing operational depth along the Indo-Myanmar boundary. Finally, the article places these developments within the wider regional context of China’s expanding footprint in Myanmar, arguing that strengthened positions in Mizoram form part of India’s effort to retain strategic leverage on its eastern flank.
