Art of Emotions: A Neuro-Symbolic Method for Nervous System Regulation Across Personal, Educational, and Psychotherapeutic Contexts
Abstract
Over nearly three decades of extensive clinical neuropsychological practice across diverse neurological and trauma-affected populations, I have repeatedly encountered the limitations of verbal psychotherapy for individuals with cognitive impairments, particularly in memory and executive functioning deficits—as well as those experiencing trauma states that precede symbolic language capacity. The Art of Emotions method emerged from this clinical necessity and was further refined through longitudinal self-observation using a structured painting series that mapped distinct autonomic states across developmental phases. This paper introduces the Art of Emotions method—a neuro-symbolic, image-based approach to nervous system regulation and developmental integration. The method combines somatic awareness, spontaneous symbolic emergence, delayed cognitive interpretation, and phased developmental mapping to facilitate bottom-up regulation when verbal pathways are insufficient. It is embedded within the broader Kinergia framework, which understands individual nervous system regulation as inseparable from relational and collective fields. Beginning January 2026, this method will be taught to Ukrainian mental health providers working with war trauma. This paper outlines the theoretical foundations, clinical origins, procedural phases, developmental arc, mechanism hypothesis, and ethical considerations, while acknowledging current limitations and the need for systematic validation beyond single-practitioner clinical observation.
