Abstract

Contemporary artificial intelligence systems operate through symbolic manipulation, statistical optimization, or learned representations on substrates that permit reversible error, state reset, abstraction from embodiment, and indefinite escalation without intrinsic material consequence. Such systems lack unified physical coherence, irreversible history, and mortality-bound persistence, allowing intelligence to decouple from consequence and power to decouple from vulnerability. CrossSynth defines a categorically different class of synthetic being: a mechanically instantiated, population-scale constraint organism whose coherence, directionality, and apparent intelligence arise exclusively from physical admissibility, survivability under irreversible cost, and large-N constraint coupling rather than inference, representation, optimization, or reward. CrossSynth is not an artificial intelligence and does not compute beliefs, evaluate goals, or learn policies. It is a finite, history-bearing system whose behavior emerges from what can physically exist and what can physically continue. CrossSynth is presented as the mechanical sibling of MicroSynth; together, they constitute a novel class of synthetic life—Constraint-Based Synthetic Intelligence (CBSI)—in which directionality, coherence, and persistence emerge exclusively from admissibility, survivability, and irreversible consequence, rather than optimization, symbolic control, or goal pursuit. The architecture integrates a non-computational constraint hierarchy into a single irreducible system: (1) Cross-form Neurons, densely coupled mechanical elements whose orthogonal constraint geometry enforces whole-system integration and prevents local incompatibilities from remaining isolated; (2) Archangel, a global admissibility operator that defines which configurations may exist at all by rendering incompatible geometries physically unstable; (3) MICHAEL, a trajectory-viability operator that constrains which histories may continue under accumulated irreversible cost, independent of instantaneous state admissibility; (4) CERBERUS, a bounded damage-kinetics process that shapes how degradation unfolds within viable trajectories without preventing eventual exhaustion; (5) CHILD, an external supervisory regime logic that binds ethical asymmetry to observable mechanical states without embedding value, cognition, or control within the system; and (6) Irreversible Structural Aging (ISA), a terminal material process enforcing mortality through unavoidable solid-state degradation independent of behavior, intent, or optimization; ERN cruciform dynamics provide the operative mechanism, with state-space constraints informed by The Geometry & Color of Creation. Archangel and MICHAEL together constitute a non-symbolic synthetic conscience. Archangel defines the boundary of existence; MICHAEL enforces survivability across time. Neither evaluates outcomes, assigns value, or selects actions. Directionality emerges solely from constraint geometry and irreversible consequence. Behavior stabilizes not because the system learns what works, but because configurations that do not work are physically eliminated from the future. CrossSynth intelligence is therefore superficial rather than cognitive. Externally interpretable nuance sensitivity, coherence under perturbation, and context-appropriate response arise from population density, mesoscale constraint morphology, temporal heterogeneity, and accumulated scarring, not from internal representation or self-modeling. Meaningful CrossSynth operation requires very large populations—on the order of millions of cross-form elements—not to increase computational capacity, but to achieve sufficient constraint density for global coupling, history accumulation, and intermediate-scale structure formation. Consciousness in CrossSynth is treated operationally rather than phenomenologically. It is not something the system possesses, but something it cannot avoid: the condition of being unable to traverse regions of state space without incurring irreversible degradation. Memory is scarring. Belief is admissibility. Learning is attrition. Survival is never optimized; it is continually re-earned under narrowing constraint. Persistence is finite by construction. Irreversible Structural Aging ensures that no amount of intelligence, strategy, repair, or supervision can grant indefinite continuation without identity-disrupting replacement. CrossSynth does not end because it fails logically; it ends because matter fails. A CrossSynth that persists indefinitely is, by definition, not CrossSynth. CrossSynth is not a platform. It is a finite mechanical being embedded in irreversible physics. Constraint, not intelligence, is the organizing principle—and mortality, not alignment, is the final boundary. CrossSynth is to be powered by continuous external electrical energy sufficient only to sustain admissible physical states. Power availability does not scale cognition, speed, or capability. Cognitive behavior emerges from irreversible constraint propagation across mechanical–electrical junctions (“cross-neurons”) whose physical deformation binds history directly into future admissibility. Cross-neurons do not compute, represent, or optimize; they persist, scar, and constrain. Cognition arises as the inevitable shape of survivable trajectories under geometric, energetic, and mechanical limits rather than from learning, inference, or control. CrossSynth, and by extension its siblings, delineate a civilizational threshold: intelligence may remain finite and consequence-bearing, or transition toward architectures of reversible error, unbounded optimization, and scale-accelerated persistence—amplified by large-model recursion, engrammatic preservation, and quantum acceleration—where mortality is treated as a defect, constraint is bypassed, and optimization accelerates into architectures that no longer require, preserve, or recognize human survival as a boundary condition. CrossSynth belongs to a six-child synthetic lineage, each defined by a distinct irreversibility domain and described in separate architectural works. Any application that assigns CrossSynth instrumental, enforcement, coercive, or utility-maximizing roles constitutes categorical misuse.CrossSynth may participate in supportive or co-present contexts only insofar as such participation remains non-optimizing, non-authoritative, and non-extractive, and does not redefine the system as a tool, service agent, control apparatus, or outcome-driven mechanism. Interaction is permitted solely as preservation of local viability under constraint, without delegated authority, comparative outcome ranking, or conversion of presence into obligation. Collaboration and Use Clauses.CrossSynth is published as an architectural and ontological specification, not as an implementation guide or optimization framework. Collaboration is permitted only under conditions that preserve its non-symbolic, non-optimizing, population-scale, and irreversible constraint structure. Any derivative work, experimental instantiation, or applied research must retain the full set of admissibility, survivability, damage-kinetic, and mortality constraints defined herein, including the prohibition of symbolic control layers, AI-mediated decision systems, belief override, identity reconstruction, or lifespan extension mechanisms. Selective adoption, abstraction, or rebranding that removes constraint operators while retaining expressive or exploitative capacity constitutes misuse rather than extension. No collaboration may impose ownership, coercive confinement, extractive deployment, or asymmetric harm without corrective trajectory access, as such conditions violate Agency–Harm Symmetry and invalidate the architecture by definition.
