Abstract

Griffiths Enhanced Double Screw Architecture (GEDSA): Adaptive‑Geometry Positive‑Displacement Transport for Industrial Bakery, Formed‑Meat, and High‑Value Food Processing This release contains the updated manuscript, figures, and supporting materials for the Griffiths Enhanced Double Screw Architecture (GEDSA) — a next‑generation double‑screw transport system designed to address the dominant performance and economic constraints in industrial bakery and formed‑meat processing, which together represent ~80% of global twin‑screw installations. GEDSA integrates three engineering innovations into a single hygienic architecture: Adaptive‑geometry screws with continuously variable pitch (0.8–1.5×D) and depth (5–25 mm), driven by servo‑actuated cam and ball‑screw mechanisms. A magnetorheological (MR) fluid cushioning annulus in the 0.5–2.0 mm barrel clearance gap, providing tunable viscosity from 0.1 to 100 Pa·s for shear‑reduction, inclusion preservation, and thermal management. A three‑layer predictive control system using Kalman‑filtered sensor fusion (Coriolis mass flow, 10‑position pressure array, torque, thermocouples, and position probes) to maintain geometry, flow stability, and HACCP‑critical temperature limits. Analytical performance modelling predicts: Portioning accuracy: CV < 0.5% Peak shear stress: reduced from 500–2,000 Pa (conventional) to 50–200 Pa (MR‑active) Thermal rise reduction: 1–2°C versus fixed‑geometry screws Inclusion integrity: > 95% for 10–20 mm particles Pressure variation: < 5% nominal Economic analysis demonstrates annual yield recovery of $1.1M on a 200,000‑unit/day industrial bread line and $289k–$587k on a 10,000 kg/day formed‑meat line, with simple payback periods of 1.5–6 months depending on application. This updated release includes: Revised manuscript with expanded bakery/meat application analysis Updated Figure 1 cutaway (adaptive geometry + MR annulus + sensor suite) Updated performance tables and economic models Corrected hygienic design and CIP protocol details Harmonised application context (bakery doughs, meat emulsions, inclusion‑rich mixes, frozen desserts, pharma/cosmetic emulsions) GEDSA occupies a previously unaddressed performance envelope in positive‑displacement transport: real‑time geometry adaptation, controlled shear environment, and active thermal management in a fully hygienic, CIP‑validated architecture. Experimental validation is planned for the next release. Keywords: adaptive geometry screw, magnetorheological fluid, bakery portioning, meat processing, inclusion integrity, positive‑displacement transport, HACCP thermal management, predictive control
