DRAFT - Generalized Pareidolia: A Unified Operator for Structural Inference in Uncertain Systems
Abstract
Pareidolia is traditionally categorized as a localized failure of the visual cortex—the erroneous perception of pattern in random noise. This paper argues that this definition is a category error. We propose that pareidolia is not a biological glitch, but the fundamental operator of structural inference itself. We formalize this process as an extension of existing top-down generative inference frameworks in predictive processing: a universal rendering function, Z = R_θ(S), where the rendered percept Z is derived from the interaction between a stochastic signal S and a library of internal priors θ. Building on previous work identifying Plasma Pareidolia as the mechanism behind UAP reports, we demonstrate that this informational architecture is scale-invariant and substrate-independent. We identify the same signal-prior gap driving structural inference across disparate domains: Financial Markets: Where S (fundamental value) is rendered through θ (subjective beliefs) into Z (narrative consensus/value). Geopolitics (Deterrence): Where S (ambiguous military signaling) is rendered through θ (strategic doctrine) into Z (threat perception). Medicine (Placebo): Where S (inert input) is rendered through θ (expectancy) into Z (somatic healing). Artificial Intelligence: Where "hallucination" Z is simply the model prioritizing θ (training weights) over a sparse S (user prompt). In all cases, the system functions as a thermodynamic homeostat, minimizing informational entropy by forcing ambiguous data into stable, actionable templates. We conclude that "reality", as experienced by any sentient agent, is never direct access to S, but always the rendered output Z. Understanding the mechanics of the R_θ operator is therefore essential for fields ranging from AI alignment to international security. This work forms part of a broader research program examining how rendering, constraint, and convergence emerge in uncertain physical, cognitive, and social systems.
