Living in Flow as Psychological Baseline: Reframing Ego, Self, and the Default Mode within UPC Psychology (Easy Read Version)
Abstract
Mainstream psychology often assumes that a stable ego and a coherent narrative self are the foundation of mental health. Neuroscience frequently links this to the default mode network (DMN), which becomes active during self-referential thought, autobiographical memory, and mental time travel. Yet a large body of research shows something striking: people can function extremely well—sometimes better than usual—when self-referential activity becomes quieter or reorganizes. This is visible in flow states, in long-term meditation, and in carefully supported psychedelic contexts where egoic self-focus can loosen, and mental flexibility can increase. This paper proposes a testable alternative within Unified Play of Consciousness (UPC) psychology: Everyday Flow States—flow-like, non-egoic functioning in ordinary life contexts—are not just special "peak states," but a strong candidate for a healthier baseline orientation of the human mind. In UPC terms, the self is best modeled as configurational potential: the capacity to shift between different patterns of attention, emotion, interpretation, and behavior without needing to defend a rigid identity. To keep this operational (and testable), UPC uses two simple measures: the Resonance–Dissonance Metric (RDM) and the Resonance Quotient (RQ). RDM consists of two independent ratings: Resonance (R: 0–5) and Dissonance (D: 0–5). RQ summarizes them as RQ = (R + 1)/(D + 1). In practice, Resonance (R) refers to qualities such as clarity, alignment, ease, coherence, connectedness, and meaningful engagement; Dissonance (D) refers to qualities such as rumination, contraction, fragmentation, compulsive defense, self-reproach, and inner conflict. These are not treated as metaphors in the paper—they are proposed as measurable experiential and behavioral patterns. The framework connects to DMN science, flow research, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Self-Determination Theory (SDT), and predictive processing, and it generates falsifiable predictions using resonance–dissonance indices, Everyday Flow State measures, and neurocognitive endpoints.
