Reproducible Research for graphs in statistical analysis (university course project)
Abstract
Welcome to our project of a reproducible research paper. We have chosen the paper Graphs in Statistical Analysis by F. J. Anscombe, published in February 1973 for our endeavor. The original paper is inlcuded under the name Anscombe-GraphsStatisticalAnalysis-1973.pdf in this upload. You will find two .zip files. One includes the processing and output of the research paper data with R, the other one is a Makefile which includes the R data (RMarkdown as PDF) but also a summary of the paper and a table with x and y values created by Anscombe. How to run the Makefile Anscombe1973_Makefile.zip:Download the .zip file and save it in its own folder. Unzip it there. Once unzipped, you will find a README.md inside it to guide you through the process on how to run the Makefile. It should work on any OS (Linux, MacOs, Windows). If not, please let us now!How to open and view RProjectAnscombe.zip:Download the .zip file and save it in its own folder. Unzip it there. Once unzipped, you will find five folders. These are the following with the content(s): Root - our R project directory containing our statistical_values.Rproj file. data - contains the exported Figures.png (created with RStudio) and a Rhistory file (a plain text file, contains the history of R code executed). The subdirectory called raw_data contains the x and y value table, originated by Anscombe and is read only. Rmd - directory with the RMarkdown file named RMarkdown_Anscombe_Graphs.Rmd . scripts - the main R script (code) named script_readtable.R . output - Outputs from the R script, namely: RMarkdown_Anscombe_Graphs.html, and RMarkdown_Anscombe_Graphs.pdf (knitted with Knitr in RStudio). To run the R script, open it in RStudio and click on Run (or press Ctrl + Enter). To download RStudio, please visit: https://posit.co/downloads/ . For the installation on your specific OS you can read up here: https://rstudio-education.github.io/hopr/starting.htmlI have included comments in the R script, please regard them so the code can run correctly. You can view all the other content either in RStudio (like the RMarkdown file) or directly from the folders (PDFs, HTML). The last file here is a PDF containing our SBOM (Software Bill of Materials). Here, we have listed every program we used, the specific version and our produced data from the research paper. Have a look to make sure everything runs fine. The files "Graphs_in_statistical_analysis_Graph.pdf", "Graphs_in_statistical_analysis__Copy_.zip" and "Dataset_x_y_pairs - Tabellenblatt1.pdf" were used to reproduce the Data given from Anscombes Paper and visualize the results to compare them with each other. The Graphs were created with TikZ and match with the graphs given in the paper. There is also a GitHub repository for our project. Here you can find the Makefile as well as other documents from our project.https://github.com/senoCel/graphs-in-statistical-analysisA project by Group 1, composed of Senem Celik (scelik4) and Corinna Hennicke (chennick).
