Commemorative Banknote: The 70th Anniversary of the Reign
Abstract
The 70-baht commemorative banknote was issued in honor of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of his accession to the throne, marked on June 9, 2016. This article examines the commemorative banknote as a contemporary historical document that reflects Thai national identity, sovereignty and collective social memory. The study focuses on its historical background, objectives of issuance, artistic elements, printing technology and technical specifications. The findings indicate that the 70-baht commemorative banknote serves not merely as a monetary instrument, but as a symbolic medium representing royal authority, constitutional kingship and the profound benevolence of the monarch toward the Thai people. Its artistic design and the use of advanced security printing techniques demonstrate a harmonious integration of traditional Thai aesthetics with modern technology. The article concludes that this commemorative banknote constitutes an important cultural heritage artifact, worthy of preservation and scholarly study, as well as transmission of its historical and ethical significance to future generations.
