Abstract

The folder contains the source data relative to the paper:Rosa, L., Sangiorgio, M., Scanlon, B., Mazzotti, M., Berry, J., and Michalak, A. One Quarter of Global Data Centers are Located in Water-Stressed Areas available at https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.6c08088 SummaryByCountry (.xlsx) sheet "Summary by country": Col A - Country nameCol B - Number of data centers Baseline 2001-2010Col C - number of data centers expeciencing 0 months per year with water scarcity (= no water scarcity)Col D - number of data centers expeciencing 1-4 months per year with water scarcityCol E - number of data centers expeciencing 5-8 months per year with water scarcityCol F - number of data centers expeciencing 9-12 months per year with water scarcity +3°C warming scenarioCol G - number of data centers expeciencing 0 months per year of water scarcity (= no water scarcity)Col H - number of data centers expeciencing 1-4 months per year of water scarcityCol I - number of data centers expeciencing 5-8 months per year of water scarcityCol J - number of data centers expeciencing 9-12 months per year of water scarcity Primary overlapping consumer sectorCol K - number of data centers primary overlapping with Municipal water useCol L - number of data centers primary overlapping with Electricity water useCol M - number of data centers primary overlapping with Livestock water useCol N - number of data centers primary overlapping with Manufacturing water useCol O - number of data centers primary overlapping with Mining water useCol P - number of data centers primary overlapping with Irrigation water use sheets "Fig 1a", "Fig 3 and 4", and "Fig 5b" report the specific information extracted from "Summary by country" to generate each figure/subfigure. Note #1: Spatially distributed information (lat/lon) of each data center is derived from a proprietary compilation provided by Saoradh Enterprise Partners and, consequently, the data relative to Fig 1b, Fig 2, and Fig 5a cannot be made available by the authors. Note #2: Future projections of months per year with water scarcity have been computed for +3°C warming level as a multi-model average of 5 climate models (IPSL-CM6A-LR, UKESM1-0-LL, GFDL ESM4, MPI-ESM1.2-HR, and MRI-ESM2.0), and using H08 as a global hydrological model. Note #3: Pixel- and country-level water gap data under different scenarios are available at: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13220763.
