Sustainable Materials Screening Tool for Low-Carbon Material Selection
Abstract
This project provides a tool for quickly screening materials based on their embodied carbon, helping engineers make more sustainable material choices early in the design process. Rather than waiting until the end of a project to assess environmental impact, this tool gives a snapshot of how different materials compare on carbon intensity, empowering more sustainable decisions at the outset. The tool uses data from the ICE database to rank materials across 16 classes, making it easy to assess alternatives and explore low-carbon options. Though it's demonstrated using construction materials, the framework is flexible and can be adapted to other systems where carbon impact is a key concern. Included in this repository is a fully reproducible pipeline, an interactive interface for testing material substitutions, and exportable results in CSV and JSON formats. It’s designed to support engineers and researchers looking to integrate sustainability into the material selection process from the very start.
