The Physical Necessity Constraints Governing the Rongorongo Script
Abstract
This paper applies a physics-only, necessity-based framework to the Rongorongo tablets to determine what kinds of information systems are physically admissible given their material substrate and production method. Treating information strictly as distinguishable physical states subject to thermodynamics, material noise, and energy constraints, the analysis shows that a wooden, manually carved medium cannot support a self-contained, scalable, high-information (open-state) writing system. By elimination, Rongorongo must operate as a low-information, closed-loop encoding system whose state resolution depends on coupling to external physical variables rather than dense internal symbol complexity. The result is a physical classification of the script that constrains interpretation without invoking linguistics, culture, or semantics.
