Unprovability and the P versus NP Problem: Metatheoretical Considerations on Independence, Proof Barriers, and Proof Complexity
Abstract
This paper examines, from a metatheoretical perspective, the hypothesis that the P vs NP problem might be independent of standard axiomatic theories such as PA or ZFC. The analysis does not attempt to derive such independence from Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, but instead clarifies what an independence claim would formally assert and what kinds of evidence would be relevant for or against it. A strict distinction is drawn between logical independence relative to a formal theory and complexity-theoretic “barrier” results that limit broad families of proof techniques (relativization, natural proofs, and algebrization). These barriers are interpreted as methodological constraints rather than as independence theorems. Finally, the paper argues that proof complexity provides a precise framework for discussing forms of methodological unprovability without invoking unjustified foundational conclusions.
