Abstract

The EFU‑Crypto Research Framework v1.0 is an experimental, EFU‑based (Ecological / Human Flux Unit) thermodynamic and metabolic accounting protocol for assessing the physical and social impacts of Proof‑of‑Work cryptocurrency mining. It goes beyond traditional, CO₂‑only and finance‑centric ESG metrics by expressing energy (EFU‑H), water (EFU‑W), materials (EFU‑M), entropy (EFU‑S) and carbon (EFU‑C) loads in a unified human‑equivalent reference system. The protocol introduces a set of experimentally defined indicators – including the Energy Cannibalism Index (EKI), Water Stress Index (WSI), Material Degradation Rate (MDR) and Metabolic Return on Investment (MROI) – that enable comparative analysis between crypto mining and alternative uses of the same physical resources. By modelling digital infrastructures as metabolic systems, the framework reveals structural imbalances between physical dissipation and local societal usefulness that remain largely invisible in conventional economic or pure emissions‑based evaluations. EFU‑Crypto is an open, hypothesis‑driven research framework (Research Phase, Pre‑standard) designed for experimental audits, cross‑jurisdictional comparisons and reproducible scientific assessment. It provides a quantitative basis for evaluating whether PoW‑based digital systems function as net contributors or as metabolically extractive burdens on human and ecological systems. This document was structured and linguistically refined with the assistance of artificial intelligence tools; all concepts, analytical models and quantitative structures are original research contributions of the author.
