THANATOLOGY: THE SCIENCE OF DEATH — NEUROSCIENCE, PHYSIOLOGY, AND HUMAN FEAR OF DEATH
Abstract
This book presents a rigorous scientific examination of death and human fear of death within the discipline of thanatology. Death is analysed strictly as a biological and physiological process involving systemic failure, neural shutdown, and loss of integrated function, without recourse to metaphysical, spiritual, religious, or philosophical interpretations. Drawing from neuroscience, physiology, psychology, and behavioural science, the work distinguishes clearly between dying processes and death itself, demonstrating that fear systems evolved to detect immediate, actionable threats—not abstract non-existence. The book systematically examines the absence of a biological death instinct, the limits of neural threat detection, lifespan variability, and the cognitive and cultural mechanisms through which death anxiety is learned and reinforced. Neural activity observed during dying is analysed as physiological breakdown rather than preserved awareness or experience. Death anxiety is framed as a neuropsychological error pattern arising from predictive failure, cultural conditioning, symbolic amplification, and intolerance of uncertainty, rather than as an innate biological mandate. This publication is a conceptual and theoretical scholarly work intended strictly for academic, educational, and research purposes. It does not provide medical advice, psychological or psychiatric diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, legal counsel, or existential guidance. No claims are made regarding life after death, consciousness beyond death, or metaphysical continuity. The book contributes to thanatology, neuroscience, physiology, psychology, and behavioural science by offering a scientifically bounded framework for understanding death and reducing unnecessary death anxiety through factual reclassification and conceptual precision.
