The Role of Trade Unions in Advancing a Just Transition for Workers
Abstract
This article explores the concept of a “just transition” by examining its different interpretations and dimensions, while emphasizing the role of trade unions in putting it into practice. The role of trade unions in advancing a just transition for workers is not only to protect the rights of individuals but also to shape the broader policy landscape to ensure that economic, social, and environmental goals are achieved in harmony. Through advocating for workers’ rights, facilitating training, ensuring decent work, and engaging in social dialogue, trade unions are vital to ensuring that the shift to a green economy is both fair and equitable. A just transition is not solely focused on reducing carbon emissions; it is equally about ensuring that workers who have been the backbone of industries being phased out are given the opportunities, protection, and respect they deserve. By actively engaging in this process, trade unions contribute to creating a more sustainable, just, and resilient future for workers, communities, and the planet.
