On the Function of Epistemic Boundaries
Abstract
This paper accompanies the canonical boundary document Second-Order Coherence Science (SOCS): Canonical Boundary. It does not extend, revise, operationalize, or apply SOCS. Its function is strictly interpretive. SOCS is frequently read as a theoretical contribution, diagnostic framework, or normative proposal. Such readings misconstrue its role. SOCS articulates second-order conditions of epistemic validity rather than participating in empirical explanation, institutional reform, or practical guidance. This paper clarifies the function of epistemic boundary documents, the rationale behind their architecture, and why non-operationality, linguistic density, and legal protection are structural requirements rather than stylistic or defensive choices.
