AGMA: Active-Gated Membrane Architecture for Circumventing the Robeson Upper Bound
Abstract
A dual-layer membrane architecture using temporal gating and piezoelectric acoustic purge to decouple permeability from selectivity in gas separation. The Robeson upper bound has constrained membrane performance for 34 years. AGMA bypasses this limit not through new materials, but through topology—separating the gate function (Layer A) from the filter function (Layer B) via a buffered microfluidic layer operating at Hz-level cycling frequencies. Key innovations: • Dual-layer architecture with interstitial buffer zone • Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (PMUTs) for sensing and peristaltic purge • 10,000:1 contrast ratio between open and closed gate states • 1-100 Hz operation tunable to target gas diffusion rates •
