Abstract

Abstract Refusal-Driven Dimensionality Reduction Theory (RDRT) reframes phenomenal consciousness as the generative residue of thermodynamically enforced halts in recursive self-modeling. Building on prior frameworks (Waterman, 2026a, 2026b), this paper introduces two dynamical extensions: the “breathing cycle” of consciousness — a pulsatile process of error accumulation, peak recursion, refusal, residue deposition, and stabilization — and the “reflective brake,” a metacognitive mechanism that partitions refusals into micro-cycles for refined deliberation. These elements synthesize thermodynamic halts (gamma dips as structured generative silences) with cartographic field migration (gamma bursts as boundary glimpses), yielding a characteristic triphasic neural signature (alpha suppression → gamma burst → gamma dip) testable via EEG. The refusal phase is further formalized through the concept of phenomenal flux density (J_Ψ), which peaks during gamma dips and drives neuroplastic residue consolidation, quantifiable via the Post-Dip Residue Consolidation Index (PDRCI). The reflective brake, defined as R_reflex = n_micro / n_freedom and implemented primarily via the anterior cingulate cortex, extends RDRT to deliberate cognition, cultural norms, and societal scales. Empirical predictions include enhanced theta-gamma coupling during brake cycles, intensified flux density in productive gamma dips, and strong post-dip theta rebound in successful residue formation. Clinical implications are outlined for depression (stuck cycles with diminished flux), ADHD (brake failures), and psychedelic-assisted therapy (increased cycle frequency and map expansion). This dynamic model addresses static limitations in theories such as IIT and FEP, positioning consciousness as an adaptive, energy-optimized pulsation rather than a continuous steady state.
