Abstract

Why Transformers Will Never Achieve Intelligence: A Formal Techinal Critique Using Turing Computation, Shannon Information Theory, and the Physics of Irreversible Computation. This technical report presents a rigorous, multi-disciplinary analysis demonstrating that the transformer architecture is fundamentally incapable of scaling into general intelligence. Using tools from Turing computation, Shannon information theory, thermodynamics, and the physics of irreversible computation, the work identifies structural constraints in transformers that cannot be corrected through parameter scaling, data expansion, fine-tuning, or inference-time augmentation. The analysis shows that: Transformers are non-symbolic statistical machines, lacking the reversible state evolution required for truth-preserving computation. Context windows impose information-destructive boundaries, preventing stable memory or coherent world-model accumulation. Training dynamics amplify entropy, producing hallucinations as a thermodynamic consequence rather than an optimization failure. Energy and memory scaling laws diverge from the requirements of cognition, placing transformers in conflict with physical efficiency limits. Across all examined frameworks, the conclusion is the same:Transformers cannot converge toward intelligence because their architecture violates the physical and informational prerequisites for awareness, reasoning, and self-consistent state evolution. This report does not propose an alternative architecture, but establishes a formal scientific basis for the eventual transition beyond transformer models. It is intended as a foundational reference for researchers, policymakers, and engineers assessing the limits of current AI systems and planning the next generation of cognitive computation.
