Abstract

Griffiths Methane–Steam Hybrid Regenerative Propulsion System V4 This paper presents the Griffiths Methane–Steam Hybrid Regenerative Propulsion System, a closed‑loop thermal architecture engineered for high thrust, long‑duration stability, and multi‑century endurance in deep‑space missions. The system combines microwave‑assisted methane cracking, high‑temperature laser steam generation, and cascaded thermal stages to create a regenerative propulsion cycle that captures, reuses, and amplifies waste heat. The architecture integrates methane’s high energy density with the thermal buffering properties of water, enabling a dual‑fluid system that maintains strong thrust output while significantly reducing propellant consumption. Regenerative heating pathways, staged thermal exchange, and controlled steam expansion form the backbone of the propulsion cycle, allowing the engine to operate efficiently across extended mission timelines. The paper details the core thermodynamic loop, microwave and laser subsystems, cascaded‑stage thrust amplification, propellant routing, and the expected performance envelope. It also outlines mission applications ranging from ark‑class transport to deep‑space logistics, and discusses scalability, integration pathways, and engineering considerations for future development. This work is part of the broader Griffiths Canon, an ongoing series of propulsion and habitat architectures that merge chemical, thermal, microwave, and regenerative processes to expand the feasible design space for next‑generation interstellar spacecraft.
