The Decoupling of Star Formation History from Galactic Dynamical Phase in MaNGA DR17
Abstract
This record contains the manuscript for Paper II in a multi-paper study of galactic dynamical phase and star-formation activity. In Paper I, a unified dynamical timescale τ\tauτ was introduced as a robust, morphology-independent separator of galactic dynamical regimes, derived from kinematic scale competition. The present work tests a central implication of that framework: whether galactic dynamical phase alone is sufficient to determine star-formation activity. Using publicly available MaNGA DR17 integral-field spectroscopy, we analyze galaxies matched in stellar mass and redshift and classified by dynamical phase. We demonstrate that galaxies occupying the same dynamical regime exhibit order-of-magnitude variation in specific star-formation rate, even under strict matching criteria. This establishes that dynamical phase is a necessary but insufficient condition for star-formation activity. This paper presents an empirical constraint and does not introduce new dynamical parameters or theoretical constructs. The result motivates the introduction of an additional state variable governing the realization of star formation, developed in subsequent work. The analysis code and derived datasets used in this study will be released separately via Zenodo, as they also support analyses presented in later papers in the series.
