Abstract

This paper explores the symbolic analysis of the Bhagavad Gita as a methodological approach to teaching within the framework of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), as emphasized by India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. By interpreting the Gita’s allegorical and symbolic elements, such as the battlefield of Kurukshetra as a metaphor for internal conflict and Krishna as a symbol of higher consciousness, this study proposes a pedagogy that fosters critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and self-awareness in students. The methodology integrates hermeneutic interpretation, content analysis, and experiential learning to align with NEP 2020’s vision of holistic, multidisciplinary education rooted in Indian intellectual traditions. Furthermore, the Bhagavad Gita's rich philosophical underpinnings provide invaluable insights into concepts like duty, righteousness, and the nature of reality, which can be particularly impactful in shaping the moral framework of today’s learners. The proposed educational approach encourages students not only to engage with these themes on a theoretical level but also to apply them in practical scenarios, promoting a deep and meaningful understanding of their relevance in contemporary society. By situating the Gita within a modern educational context, this study invites educators to consider innovative pedagogical practices that incorporate these timeless teachings, ultimately aiming to develop well-rounded individuals equipped to navigate the complexities of the world around them. In this integration, the study emphasizes the importance of contextualizing traditional knowledge in the light of current educational needs, advocating for a curriculum that respects cultural heritage while addressing contemporary challenges. It aims to cultivate an environment where students are encouraged to question, reflect, and explore their identities and values, thus preparing them for active and responsible citizenship. This approach not only enhances academic engagement but also promotes emotional intelligence and resilience, attributes that are essential in today’s fast-paced and often chaotic world. In doing so, the study hopes to contribute to the broader discourse on educational reform within the Indian context, aligning with global trends that prioritize student-centered, experiential learning.
