Abstract

For nearly all of human history, people lived embedded in immediate surroundings—land, weather, seasons, light, sound, and movement—without abstract theories of space. Theynavigated by memory: of paths, landmarks, rhythms, and environmental responses. In SP3terms, humans evolved while continuously interacting with space that carried history—paths worn into terrain, air shaped by daily heating, acoustics of caves, and visual cuesaltered by time of day and season.Life did not unfold in a reset universe. It unfolded in one where use mattered (see Fig. 1).
