Abstract

This research examined the lived experiences of elderly individuals aged 60 years and older who engage in night work in Dumaguete City, Philippines, with the objective of gaining insight into the physical, emotional, social, and economic difficulties they encounter. A descriptive phenomenological approach was employed, using purposive sampling to recruit nine participants, including vendors and parking attendants. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, field observations, and audio recordings to capture participants’ personal experiences. The collected data were analyzed following Colaizzi’s seven-step method, which involved identifying significant statements, developing formulated meanings, clustering emerging themes, and returning findings to participants for validation to enhance trustworthiness. Seven key themes emerged from the analysis, reflecting challenges related to livelihood sustainability, emotional and social burdens, family obligations, spiritual and inner resilience, health management, and the role of social support systems. Although participants reported persistent fatigue, unstable income, health-related concerns, and limited social interaction, they exhibited strong resilience, determination, and a clear sense of purpose anchored in familial responsibilities and spiritual beliefs. The findings underscore the importance of implementing age-sensitive labor policies, accessible community health initiatives, and strengthened social support services designed specifically for elderly night workers. Overall, the study offers valuable insights into aging, informal employment, and social vulnerability within the Philippine setting and serves as a basis for developing programs and policies that uphold the welfare and dignity of older adults engaged in nontraditional work schedules.
