Clinical Case Formulation and Conceptualization
Abstract
Clinical practice is not defined solely by techniques or diagnostic systems, but by the clinician’s ability to understand the person behind the symptoms. Case formulation represents the intellectual and ethical core of psychological practice, providing a structured yet flexible way to integrate theory, evidence, and lived experience into meaningful clinical understanding. This work was conceived to respond to a persistent gap in professional training: the need for a comprehensive, integrative, and practical guide to clinical case formulation that transcends rigid diagnostic labels. Rather than offering a single theoretical stance, it embraces plurality, encouraging clinicians to think critically, reflexively, and contextually about human suffering. Grounded in contemporary research and professional standards, this book seeks to support clinicians, students, and educators in developing sophisticated clinical reasoning. Its ultimate purpose is to strengthen the quality of care, promote ethical responsibility, and enhance the collaborative relationship between clinician and client.
