Selection Pressure & Natural Selection of Thought - Evolutionary Dynamics in Semantic Reasoning Systems
Abstract
Description Evolutionary Dynamics and Cognitive Stability in Semantic Reasoning This paper develops the concept of Selection Pressure within the Semantic Topology Reasoning Architecture (STRA), proposing that reasoning processes can be understood as evolutionary dynamics unfolding across a semantic topology. Instead of treating thought as a linear chain of symbolic operations, this framework models reasoning as a population of competing activation patterns subject to variation, competition, inhibition, and convergence. The system “selects” stable, coherent, and causally aligned patterns while suppressing noisy or contradictory ones. Drawing from cognitive science, evolutionary theory, and STRA’s activation‑based substrate, the paper argues that intelligent reasoning emerges from selective pressures, not from deterministic rule execution. Selection Pressure acts as the stabilizing force that prevents runaway activation, resolves ambiguity, and guides the system toward convergent, interpretable conclusions. This mechanism also explains how STRA balances exploration and exploitation, enabling both creative insight and reliable problem‑solving. The paper positions Selection Pressure as a core primitive of STRA, essential for transparent reasoning, cross‑domain generalization, and the emergence of expertise. It provides the conceptual foundation for understanding how semantic systems maintain coherence while remaining flexible enough to adapt, learn, and refine their internal processes over time. Abstract This paper introduces Selection Pressure as a foundational mechanism for stabilizing and guiding reasoning within the Semantic Topology Reasoning Architecture (STRA). Rather than viewing cognition as a deterministic sequence of symbolic operations, STRA models reasoning as an evolutionary process: activation patterns compete for survival within a semantic topology, shaped by contextual relevance, inhibition dynamics, causal alignment, and structural coherence. We formalize Selection Pressure as the force that filters activation patterns, suppresses noise, resolves ambiguity, and promotes convergence toward stable, interpretable reasoning states. This evolutionary framing explains how STRA avoids hallucination, maintains semantic focus, and balances exploration with exploitation. It also provides a natural account of how expertise emerges: frequently successful reasoning patterns become more stable and require less computational effort over time. Selection Pressure is presented as one of STRA’s five core primitives, alongside Activation Arrays, Causal Signatures, Transform Learning, and the Semantic Abacus. Together, these mechanisms form a transparent, structure‑centric alternative to parameter‑centric AI systems. Background This work is part of a six‑paper series introducing and expanding the Semantic Topology Reasoning Architecture: Paper 0 – Manifest: Semantic Topology Reasoning Architecture (STRA) (10.5281/zenodo.18207533) Paper 1: Activation Arrays as Working Memory in Semantic Reasoning Systems (10.5281/zenodo.18207539) Paper 2: Causal Signatures for Cross‑Domain Reasoning (10.5281/zenodo.18207546) Paper 3: Selection Pressure & Natural Selection of Thought (this paper) Paper 4: Transform Learning: Procedural Reasoning Without Programs (10.5281/zenodo.18207558) Paper 5: The Semantic Abacus: Quantitative, Symbolic, and Skill‑Based Reasoning (10.5281/zenodo.18207560) It builds directly on STRA’s activation‑based substrate and provides the theoretical grounding for reasoning stability, convergence, and the emergence of expertise. Key Contributions Evolutionary Model of Reasoning: Reframes cognition as selection among competing activation patterns. Stability Mechanism: Explains how STRA avoids runaway activation and maintains semantic coherence. Ambiguity Resolution: Shows how Selection Pressure suppresses contradictory or irrelevant activations. Exploration–Exploitation Balance: Provides a natural mechanism for creativity and reliability within the same system. Emergent Expertise: Demonstrates how repeated reasoning patterns become more efficient and stable over time. Architectural Integration: Establishes Selection Pressure as a core primitive within STRA’s structure‑centric paradigm. Research Impact This work contributes to cognitive architecture, AI interpretability, and computational epistemology by: Providing a transparent alternative to opaque attention‑based stabilization in LLMs Offering a biologically and cognitively inspired model of reasoning dynamics Enabling verifiable reasoning traces grounded in activation competition Supporting the emergence of expertise without parameter‑scale inflation Strengthening STRA’s position as a viable architecture for transparent, evolvable reasoning systems Access and Documentation ORCID: https://orcid.org/0009-0003-4876-9273 GitHub: https://github.com/Neuron-Soul-AI/Neuron-Soul-AI LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcelo-emanuel-paradela-teixeira-702082382/ Email: marcelo.soul.ai@gmail.com License: CC BY‑NC 4.0 © Marcelo Emanuel Paradela Teixeira 2026
