Abstract

These files pertain to demonstrators developed as part of the SSLiP project. The demonstrators are constructed of LEGO bricks and were designed using Bricklink.com's "Studio" software. For information on how to use the files and order your own LEGO demonstrators, please see "README.pdf". There are eight demonstrators: Commensurability DemonstratorThis demonstrator is designed to show how commensurability can affect the frictional properties of a system. Hand-cranked TribometersThis set of two hand-cranked tribometers are designed to demonstrate how different factors like roughness and normal force affect friction. Mini Commensurability DemonstratorThis demonstrator is a smaller version of the commensurability demonstrator. Model Linear TribometerThis demonstrator produces "print-outs" of a force-trace in a similar way a tribometer or atomic force microscope would. Nanoscale Surface Friction Demonstrator (Square Lattice)This demonstrator set gives users a hands-on way to feel the effect that surface patterning has on friction. Nanoscale Surface Friction Demonstrator (Triangular Lattice)This demonstrator set gives users a hands-on way to feel the effect that surface patterning has on friction. Prandtl-Tomlinson ModelThis demonstrator uses magnets to bring the Prandtl-Tomlinson model of friction to life. Simple Mica ModelThis simple model of mica crystal uses magnets to demonstrate attraction between layers and how the layers can slide over one another with appropriate force.
