Abstract

The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) in education, leading to the paradigm of Smart Education, promises to revolutionize traditional pedagogical approaches by enabling personalized learning and optimizing institutional operations. However, the implementation of IoT in educational settings is often ad-hoc, with a lack of integrated frameworks and empirical evidence quantifying its efficacy. This paper proposes a novel, scalable IoT framework for smart classrooms designed to collect real-time data on student engagement and environmental conditions. The framework comprises a network of sensors (wearable, environmental, and object-tracking) connected via a gateway to a cloud-based analytics platform. We deployed a pilot study in a university setting over one academic semester. Data collected from 120 students across four courses were analyzed to measure the impact on learning outcomes and operational efficiency. Results demonstrate a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05) in academic performance (average 15.4% increase in assessment scores) for the group using the IoT-personalized system compared to the control group. Furthermore, the system achieved a 22% reduction in energy consumption through automated environmental controls. A comparative analysis with existing systems highlights the superiority of our integrated approach in terms of functionality, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. The study concludes that a systematically designed IoT framework can simultaneously enhance the learning experience and institutional sustainability, while also discussing challenges related to data privacy and initial deployment costs.
