Abstract

The present study was aimed at determining total phenolic and flavonoid contents and studying the antioxidant activity of T. angustifolia L. Phytochemicals such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids, commonly known as antioxidants are the major source of lead compounds and drugs. The calibration curve was plotted using standard gallic acid. The total phenolic contents (TPC) observed in the methanolic extract of T. angustifolia L. was 1.192±0.123 mg GAE/g . The calibration curve was plotted using standard quercetin. The total flavonoid contents (TFC) revealed by methanolic extract of T. angustifolia L. was 0.412± 0.041mg QE/g DE. DPPH radicals scavenging activity of Typha angustifolia crude extracts showed DPPH activity which is comparable to standard drugs ascorbic acid. Dose-dependent percentage inhibition ranging from 31.1-89.5% was observed with crude extract at different concentrations ranging from 50- 250μg/ml with IC50 51.54 μg/ml. Thus, it is clear from the results that extract showed potent antioxidant activity particularly at higher concentrations.
