Why Insight Does Not Lead to Change: Self-Conservation and the Arrest of Individuation
Abstract
Abstract This paper proposes an architectural interpretation of individuation in analytical psychology based on the theory of self-conservative systems. Individuation is conceptualized not as the attainment of a fixed state of wholeness but as the preservation of the psyche’s adaptive capacity under conditions of continuous change. The study demonstrates that the interruption of individuation does not primarily result from external events or insufficient insight, but from a primary experience of mismatch arising from a misinterpretation of one’s own incompleteness as a threat. Within this framework, fear is understood not as an emotion but as a structural state that initiates a self-conservative configuration and redirects psychic energy toward maintaining an illusory completeness. Jungian concepts of Persona, Shadow, and Self are reinterpreted as structural consequences of this shift rather than its causes. A distinction is drawn between trauma as an event and trauma as an architectural outcome, and the mechanism of adaptive function migration under blocked individuation is described. The proposed model refines the methodological foundations of analytical and practical psychology by shifting the focus from identity fixation to the restoration of the psyche’s capacity to live within dynamic processes.
