The Environmental Return on Sustainability Systems
Abstract
The Environmental Return on Sustainability Systems introduces a system-level framework for evaluating environmental policies, ESG mechanisms, and sustainability infrastructures based on their net physical impact, rather than on symbolic or normative criteria. The core insight is that environmental governance systems themselves have a material footprint: data collection, audits, digital infrastructure, compliance, and institutional complexity all consume energy and resources. An intervention is therefore only environmentally justified if the realized environmental improvement exceeds the environmental cost of operating the system that produces it.
