Abstract

This paper introduces Cosmosynthesis, a theoretical framework exploring the possibility that consciousness arises through a convergent interaction between biological systems and a non-sentient, universal intelligence embedded in the fabric of physical reality. Rather than proposing that the universe itself is conscious, Cosmosynthesis advances the hypothesis that self-organizing informational principles—already evident in quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and biological evolution—may also participate in the emergence and development of cognition and awareness. Contemporary debates on consciousness are often polarized between materialist models, which locate consciousness entirely within neural computation, and dualist models, which posit a non-physical mind. This framework seeks to move beyond that dichotomy by proposing that consciousness is best understood as a capacity—specifically, the capacity to perceive, recognize, and respond to information—rather than as a property dependent on subjective qualia or personal identity. Qualia, emotion, memory, and self-narrative are treated here as secondary contents processed by consciousness, not as its defining features. Drawing analogies from physics and biology, Cosmosynthesis compares the proposed emergence of consciousness to photosynthesis: just as electromagnetic radiation from the Sun is transduced into biological energy through a structured biochemical process, it is hypothesized that informational aspects of electromagnetic and quantum phenomena may be transduced into cognitive and sentient states through biological substrates. This paper explores whether ultra-high-frequency electromagnetic phenomena, quantum informational structures, or non-local processes could plausibly function as carrier mechanisms for such transduction, without requiring the universe to be sentient or invoking metaphysical assumptions. The framework engages existing models—including quantum cognition, electromagnetic field theories of consciousness, and Orch-OR—while proposing an alternative interpretation in which consciousness does not require localized quantum wave-function collapse within the brain. Instead, cognition and awareness are framed as emergent expressions of universal self-organizing principles interacting with classical neurobiology at multiple scales. Cosmosynthesis is presented explicitly as a hypothesis and heuristic framework, not as a validated theory. No claim is made that the mechanisms described here have been empirically confirmed. Rather, the aim is to articulate a coherent, interdisciplinary model that is logically consistent with established physics while remaining open to falsification through future advances in quantum biology, neuroscience, and high-energy electromagnetic research. By reframing consciousness as an emergent interface between biological systems and universal informational order, this work seeks to contribute to ongoing discussions in physics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and philosophy—particularly those concerned with the origins of intelligence, the limits of reductionism, and the possibility of a deeper unifying architecture underlying both matter and mind.
