Abstract

Delay Is Design: Mapping the Currency of Friction examines how modern systems convert obstruction into value through engineered friction. Drawing from six axes of analysis — temporal, spatial, digital, legal, emotional, and economic — the essay demonstrates that delay is not a malfunction but a governance strategy embedded in contemporary infrastructures. Each axis includes concrete, real‑world examples that reveal how systems monetize waiting, externalize infrastructural gaps, suppress visibility, generate ambiguity, script confusion, and manufacture scarcity. Positioned within the broader SignalRupture canon, this work extends the diagnostic lineage established in Slow Harm Theory, Infrastructural Exposure Theory, Systemic Erosion Theory, and Black Box Intent. Together, these frameworks map how systems produce cumulative injury, generate harm through designed contact, erode capacity over time, and conceal operational logic behind opaque decision layers. By reframing friction as design rather than dysfunction, the essay provides a forensic method for identifying where systems profit from obstruction and how individuals are conditioned to internalize structural harm as personal failure. The diagnostic grid presented here offers researchers, practitioners, and affected individuals a tool for recognizing, naming, and resisting the mechanisms through which delay becomes currency and confusion becomes leverage.
