Abstract

Mathematical practice is examined through the interaction between informal and formal reasoning. Informal mathematical reasoning is treated as constraint-sensitive structural navigation that tracks necessity, collapse, and invariance without reliance on explicit symbolic derivation, while formal mathematics is understood as the compression of such structure into symbolic systems that enable verification, communication, and collective accumulation. Mathematical competence is framed as participation in norm-governed practices in which concepts function as constraints rather than as mere labels, and where correctness is enforced through structural coherence rather than analogy.
