Serotonin: From Peripheral Mechanic to the Melanin Circuit
Abstract
Serotonin, or 5-HT, is not just a "happy chemical" in the brain. This paper explores its foundational role as a chemical messenger throughout the body, acting as a neurotransmitter, hormone, and growth factor. We look at its historical discovery, which surprisingly first occurred in the gut and blood, not the brain. The monograph also provides a critical review of the famous but largely debunked "chemical imbalance" theory of depression. Finally, we discuss new, more complex models that frame serotonin not just in terms of mood, but as a key regulator of the gut-brain axis, a factor in how the brain changes and adapts (neuroplasticity), and a critical player in our ability to cope with stress. The future of research is shifting away from simply trying to boost serotonin levels and toward targeting specific receptors for more nuanced, personalized treatments.-----1.
