Oath, lineage, and return: a letter from Las Charcas (1580) by Gonzalo de Ribas Valdés to his father in Oviedo
Abstract
Abstract:This article analyses a 1580 letter written by Gonzalo de Ribas Valdés, an Asturian hidalgo in Las Charcas and preserved in the Archivo General de Indias (Spain). The document offers a rare insight into the emotional and strategic dimensions of early modern Hispanic migration and traces Gonzalo’s rise as a merchant, scribe, and local elite in the Viceroyalty of Peru. His plan for noble legitimation—sending a younger brother and the family’s heraldic arms—is contextualised through additional archival evidence, situating his case within broader patterns of Atlantic mobility, kinship, and colonial career building.
