Buddha Relics and Stupa Deposits
Abstract
Buddhist stupas are more than just monuments; they are time capsules, preserving not only centuries of architectural history but also a wealth of relics, coins, and sacred offerings. While these deposits offer a fascinating glimpse into devotion and history, the evidence they hold has always been a puzzle. Excavation records can be spotty, archives are a tangled mess, and key terms often get lost in translation across different regions and languages. This book cuts through the confusion. It brings together scattered information from archaeological reports, museum collections, and older scholarship into a single, consistent framework. Each stupa is examined through the same lens, looking at its location, the context of the deposit, the types of relics inside—whether bone, ash, or symbolic stand-ins—and the reliability of the original source. The book pays special attention to coins, which are often used to date these structures. We carefully distinguish between coins that were sealed in the original deposit and those that found their way in later. We also untangle frequent mix-ups in old reports, like the confusion between actual “coins” and decorative metal “coils”—a small detail that can change the entire story of a site. By comparing these details across South and Central Asia, the book reveals the bigger story of how relic worship worked. It shows how sacred objects, from bone fragments to symbolic substitutes, connected faith with the worlds of patronage and power. Part deep-dive catalogue and part interpretive guide, *Buddha Relics and Stupa Deposits* offers a clear new method and an essential reference for anyone trying to make sense of the rich history sealed within these ancient structures.
