STATE OF ART REVIEW ON E-WASTE, ITS ILL EFFECT AND METHODS OF RECOVERY OF HEAVY METALS FROM E-WASTE
Abstract
The issue of E-waste generation and its disposal is concerning all the stakeholders from policymakes to the end users which will results in development of more research on environmental friendly disposal methods of E-waste.E-waste consist of discarded electronic appliances like computers, mobiles, other electronic home appliances. USA, China, Europe and Australia are major E-waste producers.Updation, development and enhancement in information technology leads to large production of electronic products resulting more E-waste. Uncontrolled disposal of E-waste generate and releases toxic metals such as Hg, Pb, Cd, Cr, Cr(VI), Co, Cu, Ni and Zn. E-waste also releases different types of flame retardants such as Poly Brominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), Poly-Chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Organo Chlorine Pesticides (OCPs).E-waste contains over 1000 different substances, some are toxic and hazardous which causes serious problems to human health and environment. More than 70% of E-waste is directly dumped into the landfills, resulting leaching of toxic heavy metals from landfills. Accountable end-of –life management of E-waste is very important to recover precious metals. Recycling of electronic waste provide an opportunity for precious and special metals to be recovered and separated the hazardous and toxic metals. Recovery methods available are classified as pyromettalrgy, hydrometallurgy and bio hydrometallurgy. This paper provides detailed review on E-waste,Genration of E-waste, its effects on environment and human health, and methods for recovery of precious metals from E-waste.
