Abstract

The The Noradrenergic System as an Emergency Override Mechanism Resolving Logical Impasse in the Dopaminergic Decision-Making Circuit: An Information-Energetic Model of Mode Switching The dopaminergic: (DA) system is effectively modeled as an optimizer calculating the net value of actions via a D-/D+ balance (deficit vs. predicted benefit). However, this optimizer enters a fatal 'logical impasse' when a vital need (high D-) exists but no known solution (D+ = 0) is available, resulting in behavioral akinesia. This paper proposes that the norepinephrine (NE) system, originating in the locus coeruleus (LC), functions as an evolutionary emergency override mechanism precisely for this impasse. We detail how LC-NE activation, triggered by homeostatic threat and insoluble uncertainty, performs a targeted multi-site modulation: it suppresses prefrontal flexible control, heightens sensory gain, reduces excessive inhibitory output of the basal ganglia (effectively prying open the blocked motor 'gate'), and activates brainstem stereotypic motor programs. This switches the brain from a 'computational optimization' mode to a 'blind exploration under threat' mode. A critical consequence is the pathological hyper-reinforcement of any accidentally discovered solution. The extreme contrast between despair (D+ expectation = 0) and discovery triggers a massive dopamine (hyper-RPE) response, leading to ultra-strong synaptic plasticity (hyper-LTP) that creates dominant, rigid behavioral schemas resistant to extinction. The model provides a unified explanatory framework for diverse phenomena: from stress-induced cannibalism and the formation of obsessive-compulsive rituals to the pathophysiology of PTSD, panic disorder, and the nature of chronic stress as a tonic, low-grade activation of this emergency circuit. Thus, the NE system is reconceptualized as a strategic switch between survival-oriented modes, whose malfunction or hyper-activation underlies a spectrum of psychopathology.
