Abstract

The global tourism industry, often celebrated as a resilient engine for economic development and cross-cultural exchange, is fundamentally vulnerable to exogenous macroeconomic and geopolitical shocks. This paper presents a comprehensive and detailed examination of the causal mechanisms through which domestic economic volatility and regional military conflict have converged to destabilize the tourism sector in Bangladesh, with St. Martin's Island (Narikel Jinjira) serving as a critical case study. Employing a comparative analytical framework, this research juxtaposes pre-crisis performance metrics (circa 2018-2019) against contemporary data to quantitatively demonstrate the degradation of tourism's economic value and structural integrity. The investigation delves into the dual shocks: firstly, the internal economic shock characterized by the sharp depreciation of the Bangladeshi Taka and escalating inflation, which has severely eroded the disposable income and purchasing power of the domestic middle class—the sector's core demographic. Secondly, it analyzes the external geopolitical shock emanating from the protracted civil conflict in neighboring Myanmar, which has cast a long shadow of perceived risk over the region. The synthesis of these forces is shown to have precipitated a statistically significant transformation in consumer behavior and market composition, marked by a stark decline in high-value international tourism and a compensatory, yet economically regressive, surge in volume-driven domestic budget travel. Concurrently, the study documents the adaptive evolution of destination marketing strategies, illustrating how industry stakeholders have transitioned from traditional international branding paradigms to agile, digitally-mediated resilience marketing. These emergent strategies prioritize real-time crisis communication, reassurance, and urgent price-sensitive promotions to sustain visitor inflows amidst profound uncertainty. The findings culminate in a stark conclusion: absent substantive macroeconomic stabilization and a durable resolution to regional security crises, Bangladesh's tourism sector, epitomized by St. Martin's Island, faces the peril of permanent market downgrade, trapped in a vicious cycle of environmental degradation and diminishing returns.
