Beale Cipher No. 3: Geodetic and Structural Analysis
Abstract
Description: This dataset contains a dual technical analysis of Beale Cipher No. 3, interpreted through 19th‑century American surveying and engineering standards. Cipher No. 1 is examined as a geodetic navigation route using bearings (degrees), elevation benchmarks (feet), and chain‑based distance units. The analysis identifies a reproducible target zone on the 2018‑foot contour of Sharp Top Mountain, Bedford County, Virginia. Cipher No. 3 is evaluated as a structural specification rather than a linguistic cipher. Statistical clustering of its numeric ranges reveals four construction layers consistent with a stone‑lined subterranean vault: base fill, intermediate packing, main masonry walls, and heavy capstone slabs. Estimated vault depth is 10–15 feet below surface. The study proposes that the Beale Papers form a unified operational system: (1) Cipher No. 1 — navigation, (2) Cipher No. 2 — inventory, (3) Cipher No. 3 — vault architecture. All interpretations are theoretical and non‑invasive. No excavation is conducted or encouraged. The target area lies near protected lands; verification should be performed only with permitted, non‑destructive methods such as LIDAR, GPR, or DEM analysis.
