Synthetic Compound Storm Event Generation Using Copula-Based non-tidal residual–Rainfall Modeling
Abstract
This repository contains MATLAB scripts for generating synthetic compound storm events by combining non-tidal residual (NTR) and rainfall (RF) time series within a probabilistic framework. The workflow samples target peak NTR–RF combinations from fitted copula models, selects physically consistent historical events, and generates time-aligned storm-tide hydrographs and rainfall fields through scaling and lag-based recombination. The resulting synthetic events are designed for use as boundary conditions in compound flood modeling, including applications in coastal and urban flood risk analysis. Key components of the code include: Sampling of peak NTR and RF values from copula-based joint distributions (First part of the analysis) Event selection using inverse-distance probability weighting Scaling of observed NTR time series and spatial rainfall fields to design peaks Combination of scaled NTR, tides, and mean sea level (MSL) to generate storm-tide hydrographs Lag-consistent merging of rainfall and water-level forcings for compound event simulation Important note:The codes of the first part of the analysis, including extreme event identification, copula fitting, and joint probability modeling, are available in a separate repository and can be found here. All scripts are provided for research and reproducibility purposes. File paths are currently set to the author’s directory and should be updated by users as needed.
