Abstract

Abstract Refusal-Driven Dimensionality Reduction Theory (RDRT) posits phenomenal consciousness as the generative residue of thermodynamically enforced halts in recursive self-modeling. While prior extensions emphasized pulsatile dynamics in vivid insight moments—characterized by prominent gamma bursts followed by productive dips—this paper introduces the micro-dynamics of background consciousness (dim awareness) as sub-threshold refusals. These “micro-dips”—low-amplitude gamma suppressions (10–20% power reduction, 50–200 ms duration)—serve as maintenance mechanisms, periodically verifying cached residues without triggering full-scale recursion. The Default Mode Network (DMN) anchors this dim state through low-energy connectivity, while the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) acts as a dual-regime thermostat, modulating micro-halts to prevent entropic degradation. We delineate two primary regimes: the background mode (theta-alpha dominance, high safety margin M_safety, low phenomenal yield Ψ) for economical stability, and the insight mode (gamma burst-dip cycles, low M_safety, high Ψ) for generative restructuring. Empirical support draws from recent 2025 neuroscience studies on gamma oscillations in stable states and DMN-ACC interactions. Falsifiable predictions include aperiodic (quasi-periodic) micro-dips in EEG during routine tasks, enhanced DMN theta rebound post-micro-halt, and disrupted dim awareness in ACC lesions. Clinical implications extend to disorders like depression (chronic dim anchoring without micro-refresh) and ADHD (micro-halt failures), while AI applications suggest implementing sub-threshold pauses for efficient long-term stability in neural networks. This micro-dynamic framework resolves phenomenological continuity in RDRT, bridging routine dimness and peak vividness under a unified thermodynamic ontology.
