Digital Leadership and Operational Efficiency in Remote Work: Evidence from India's Financial Services Industry
Abstract
This paper focuses on exploring the essence of remote work activities and how digital leadership can be used to influence the efficiency of operations in the Indian financial services sector. The survey data were obtained through a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design, using data that were gathered by employees of over 40 financial institutions, which comprised both the public and the private sector banks, insurance companies, mutual funds, and fintech firms. Two objectives are the subject of the analysis: to determine the current remote work strategies and to determine the impact of digital leadership on the perceived operational efficiency in remote work environments. Descriptive and non-parametric inferential statistics indicate that there is a high degree of heterogeneity in remote work practices among organizations and levels of designation. Although respondents indicate that they have sufficient technological infrastructure and cybersecurity support, the opinions about the strategic integration and permanence of remote work are polarized. The senior management has much more positive attitudes towards remote work as a strategic and permanent model than the execution-level employees, which indicates a marked vertical perception difference. The interorganizational differences are clear in most of the dimensions, though there is a wide similarity in the internal patterns in large private banks. Correlation tests reveal a very high positive relationship between digital leadership and operational efficiency, which means that leadership competences in using digital resources, enhancing innovation, and enhancing trust are strongly correlated with perceived efficiency benefits in remote work settings. The non-parametric methods were appropriate due to non-normality and heteroscedasticity of the data, which further strengthened the conclusions. In general, the paper highlights the paramount nature of integrating digital leadership practices with remote working strategies to achieve sustainable operational advantages.
