Citizen Science: A Force for Social Change
Abstract
This report documents the participation of Citizen Scientists from the MƗẊɄFȦB project (Migrant Citizens Scientists in a Urban FarmHub) at the Citizen Science Fair held at MUSE Science Museum in Trento, Italy, on December 14, 2025. The event represented a pivotal moment in transforming traditional research paradigms by repositioning migrants from research subjects to active researchers investigating migrant entrepreneurship and cultural integration. The paper examines the methodological significance of reversing traditional research roles, demonstrating how Citizen Science not only democratizes knowledge production but actively transforms both researchers and participants. Interviews became bidirectional exchanges where cultural concepts like tontines (Senegalese community financing) enriched public understanding while challenging stereotypes and making invisible entrepreneurial networks visible. Beyond data collection, the event catalyzed personal transformations—including first-time museum visits and commitments to cultural engagement—illustrating that Citizen Science's greatest impact may lie in the lived experiences and social change it generates rather than in datasets alone.
