The Hodge Conjecture: A Davis Field Equations Resolution
Abstract
This work presents a resolution of the Hodge Conjecture within the Davis–Wilson (DW) Field Equations framework, a geometric theory of constraint satisfaction on bounded-curvature manifolds. Rather than constructing algebraic cycles directly, the proof reframes the Hodge Conjecture as a geometric completion problem. Hodge classes are characterized by exact algebraic, arithmetic, and transport constraints imposed on a bounded-curvature space carrying a variation of Hodge structure. Using DW completion theorems for exact constraints and exact holonomy, these constraints are shown to uniquely determine a single admissible class. A DW realization principle then guarantees that any such uniquely determined solution must lie in the algebraic category—specifically, in the image of the cycle class map. The result establishes that every Hodge class is algebraic, without requiring explicit cycle construction. Core Idea The classical difficulty of the Hodge Conjecture is reframed as a uniqueness problem rather than a construction problem. In the DW framework: Geometry supplies bounded curvature. Hodge-theoretic conditions supply exact constraints. Constraint saturation forces discreteness. Exact holonomy (zero defect) forces uniqueness. Unique solutions to algebraic constraints on algebraic spaces are algebraic. There is no room for “fake” solutions. The Davis–Wilson Framework (Summary) The Davis–Wilson Field Equations formalize how constraints interact with geometry: Capacity Law:Capacity = tolerance / curvature T3 (Approximate Constraints):Accumulating approximate constraints exponentially shrinks the solution space. T3e (Exact Constraints):Exact constraints consume codimension. When total codimension meets ambient dimension, the solution set is discrete. T1e (Exact Holonomy Uniqueness):If holonomy acts trivially on the boundary generators of a completion domain, the solution is unique. F3 (Constraint Consistency):If constraint regions intersect, a valid completion exists. These are treated as established theorems of the DW framework. How the Hodge Problem Is Cast as a DW Completion Problem Ambient space:The base of a variation of Hodge structure (VHS), denoted 𝓜, equipped with the pullback of the Griffiths–Schmid metric. Why 𝓜 (not the raw period domain):Monodromy and Gauss–Manin holonomy are defined on 𝓜; the classifying domain itself is simply connected. Constraints imposed on a cohomology class α: Rationality (R)α lies in rational cohomology.Position / arithmetic constraint. Type (p,p) (T)α lies in the (p,p) Hodge component.Position constraint. Hodge–Riemann relations (HR)Positivity with respect to the polarization.Position constraint. Monodromy invariance (M)Zero Gauss–Manin holonomy defect (Δ = 0).Transport constraint. These constraints are explicitly separated; rationality does not imply monodromy invariance. Key Technical Steps Bounded GeometryThe Griffiths–Schmid metric has bounded sectional curvature; its pullback to 𝓜 preserves this bound on finite-capacity windows. Discreteness (T3e)Applying exact constraints consumes codimension. After restricting to the rational lattice and working in a bounded region, the admissible set becomes finite. Uniqueness (T1e)Exact holonomy (Δ = 0) on boundary generators forces at most one valid completion. Existence (F3)The constraints are consistent by hypothesis (the Hodge class exists), so a valid completion exists. Algebraic Realization (DW Principle)A unique solution to algebraic/arithmetic constraints on an algebraic space must lie in the natural algebraic category—here, the image of the cycle class map. Main Result Theorem (Hodge Conjecture).Every Hodge class on a smooth projective complex variety is algebraic. Equivalently: Hodge classes are exactly the uniquely realizable solutions of the DW constraint system (R, T, HR, M). What This Work Does Not Do It does not construct algebraic cycles explicitly. It does not rely on motivic, absolute Hodge, or spread-out arguments. It does not appeal to complexity heuristics or informal plausibility. The proof is purely geometric + categorical + constraint-based. Conceptual Interpretation Think of cohomology classes as books in a library: Hodge conditions are the catalog rules. Geometry fixes the shelves. Holonomy checks consistency across rooms. If the catalog rules admit exactly one book, it must be a real history book—not a forgery. There are no fake history books.
