Viral Disease as a Problem of Regulatory Coherence, Field–matter interactions and multiscale host regulation
Abstract
Viral disease is commonly modelled as a consequence of exposure to and replication of pathogenic viral particles within a host. While this paradigm has been central to virology and medicine, it does not fully account for persistent empirical observations such as wide inter-individual variability in disease severity, weak correlations between viral load and clinical outcome, and the persistence of post-viral syndromes following apparent viral clearance. This paper proposes a complementary systems-level framework in which viral disease is understood as an emergent outcome of interaction between structured viral perturbations and the host’s regulatory coherence. Viruses are treated as stable field–matter configurations whose biological significance arises through coupling with host regulatory systems rather than from particle presence alone. The host organism is modelled as a multiscale regulatory coherence system integrating immune, neuroendocrine, metabolic, bioelectric, and mechanical control processes. Within this interactional framework, disease severity and persistence reflect the coherence state of the host system at the time of viral perturbation, providing a unified explanation for asymptomatic infection, immune-mediated pathology, stress-dependent susceptibility, and post-viral disease states. The work does not reject established virological evidence, but reframes causality at the level of system regulation, preserving particle-based insights while clarifying their explanatory limits. The paper is conceptual and integrative in nature. It introduces no new experimental data, but offers a disciplined theoretical synthesis intended to guide future experimental design, clinical interpretation, and systems-level modelling of viral illness.
