Abstract

The BioSpark Microcell is an open, ethically licensed bio-electrochemical micro-power concept intended to explore alternatives to lithium-based micro-energy systems for low-power electronic applications. The platform uses microbial or biochemical electron transfer processes to accumulate charge in an internal storage element and subsequently release that energy in short, discrete bursts capable of driving LEDs, sensors, or simple computational events. Traditional microbial fuel cells focus on continuous, low-current electrical output; the BioSpark Microcell instead emphasizes compactness, modularity, demonstrability, and burst-mode power delivery. This makes the system suitable for educational demonstrations, distributed environmental sensing, micro-robotics, and humanitarian contexts in which energy scarcity prohibits conventional battery usage. This release includes a patent-style technical dossier, a technical/investor-oriented whitepaper, figure plates, citation metadata, ethical licensing, and a formal prior-art disclosure. The work is published as a citable DOI-indexed contribution under a CC BY 4.0 license with an additional No Harmful Use clause prohibiting oppressive, weapons-related, or coercive applications. The objective of the release is to establish BioSpark as a public research and development space, enabling laboratories, educators, institutions, and independent researchers to extend the concept openly without patent enclosure. The design aligns with open hardware, open science, and STEM outreach ecosystems, and is dedicated “to all evolutions of humanity, biological or otherwise.”
