Beyond Borders: Kurdish Refugee Women's Experiences through Women's Narratives
Abstract
Beyond Borders: Kurdish Refugee Women’s Experiences through Women’s Narratives I am pleased to announce the publication of my new article, Beyond Borders: Kurdish Refugee Women’s Experiences through Women’s Narratives, which explores the gendered dimensions of refugee resettlement through the lived experiences of Kurdish women in Finland. Drawing on in-depth interviews and women’s personal narratives, this study examines how gender shapes refugee women’s access to resources, support systems, and opportunities for integration, as well as their negotiation of cultural identities within family and community contexts. The findings highlight both the structural challenges refugee women face and the resilience, agency, and strategies they develop in response to gender discrimination, cultural expectations, and socio-economic constraints. By centring Kurdish women’s voices, this research contributes to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of refugee resettlement in Nordic contexts. The article advocates for gender-sensitive policies and practices that recognise refugee women not only as recipients of support, but as active agents in rebuilding their lives and contributing to the social and economic fabric of their new communities.
